이 글은 도시에 대한 인문학적 연구가 어떤 문제를 다루며, 어떤 식으로 도시연구에기여할 수 있는지에 대해 논한다. 이 글은 (1) 우선 앞부분에서 이 물음에 대한 직접적인 대답을 간단히 제시하고, 이어서 (2) 지구화 과정에 대한 역사철학적 분석을 통해도시인문학적 연구의 사례를 구체적으로 제시한다. (1) 도시연구와 인문학은 전혀 무관한 것이 아니다. 이미 인문학은 도시연구에 다양한방식으로 개입되어 왔다. 도시인문학의 기본 과제는 선행적인 도시인문학적 연구들을 체계적으로 정리하고, 도시연구에 필요한 새로운 인문학적 주제들을 개발하여, 도시인문학의 이론적 기반을 구축하는 것이다. 특히 도시인문학은 현재의 도시연구들의 주제와 논의 방향을 따라가면서 이 논의들에 필요한 인문학적 연구들을수행하여 현재의 도시연구에 기여해야 한다. 그리고 21세기 도시연구에서 화두가된 문화, 문화도시에 대한 관심은 오늘날의 도시연구가 사회과학과 인문학을 가로지르는 포괄적인 도시연구로 확대되어야 한다는 것을 의미한다. (2) 오늘날 도시연구에서 활발한 쟁점은 지구화 시대에서의 도시의 변화에 대한 연구이다. 그런데 아직까지 지구화 과정에 대한 역사철학적 연구가 별로 이루어지고있지 못한 채, 지구화의 역사적 위상이 탈산업주의와 탈현대주의에 대한 혼란 속에서 제대로 파악되지 못하고 있다. 탈현대주의가 탈산업주의와 혼동됨으로써, 현대의 도구적 합리성의 한계를 비판하고, 다시금 인간적 삶의 논리를 모색하려던탈현대주의의 인식론적 가치가 지구화 시대 도시연구에서 충분히 파악되지 못하였고, 이로 인해 지구화 시대에 도시 속에서 초래되고 있는 여러 문제점들을 비판하는 대안적인 이론적 논의가 혼란에서 벗어나지 못하였다.
Abstract
This article deals with what the humanistic research on the city dealswith and how it may contribute to urban studies. After a direct answer tothese questions is briefly proposed in the beginning, a histo-philosophicalanalysis of the globalization process is introduced as a specific example ofthe humanistic research on the city. (1) Humanities have not been separated from urban studies at all, buthave intervened in them in a variety of ways. Urban humanities at this stagemay well aim to estimate preceding research in a systemic way and tocreate new humanistic frameworks needed for urban studies, establishingtheoretical foundations for them. Urban humanities should catch up with whatis discussed in urban studies and, based upon this, fill up with what ismissing in them. In particular, the concept of culture and culture city, onwhich urban studies have focused in the 21st century, means that urbanstudies should encompass not only all disciplines of social sciences but alsohumanities. (2) Another heated debate in the area of urban studies is about thechanging character of the city in the ear of globalization. Because there hasbeen a shortage of profound histo-philosophical study, the historical contextof globalization has not been accurately captured. The confusion ofpost-modernism with post-industrialism has resulted in failing to understandthe epistemological strength of post-modernist approach which criticizesinstrumental rationality and attempt to explore humane logic of life. As aconsequence, alternative theories, as a critique of the urban in the era ofglobalization, could barely emerge.
