최근 도시와 인문학의 연결이 다양해지면서 도시인문학이 새로운 학문영역으로서 등장하였다. 도시인문학은 엄밀하게 정의된 분화학문으로서의 인문학이 아니라 다양한 접근이 공존하는 복합적인 학술적 논의들과 실천 행위로 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 도시인문학의 등장 배경을 분석하고 도시인문학의 다양한 구성을 제시함으로써 도시인문학의 다양성에 대한 이해를 높이고 도시인문학 발전을 위해 필요한 논의에 기여하고자 한다. 도시인문학은 정부의 인문학 지원사업을 배경으로 새로운 인문학의 융합학문으로서 등장하였는데 대학의 제도화된 움직임으로서 서울시립대의 도시인문학 이외에도 다른 대학에서 진행되고 있는 마을 인문학이나 로컬리티 인문학도 도시인문학의 성격을 갖고 있는 것으로 파악되었다. 대학 밖에서의 도시인문학은 도시 공간의 장소성을 보완하는 내러티브와 역사적 지식을 제공해 주는 역할을 수행함으로써 오늘날 도시브랜딩과 도시관광이 도시경쟁력의 중요한 자원이 되는 상황에서 도시인문학이 도시마케팅의 자원 구축에 크게 기여하고 있다. 비판 담론으로서의 도시인문학은 도시기업가주의와 토건주의 개발에 대한 비판적 관점을 제공해주는 역할을 수행한다. 도시인문학은 다양한 실천 프로그램으로서도 기능하는데 이는 인문학의 대중화나 사회적 약자를 위한 프로그램을 포괄할 뿐만 아니라 도시정치의 프로그램으로서도 활용되고 있으며 수원의 사례에서 보듯이 인문도시 사업으로 구체화되는 경우도 나타나고 있다.
Abstract
Recently, urban humanities emerged as a new academic field and gained an increasing attention from an academic world as well as from a side of public policy. Observing the current discourses and practices leads to acknowledge that urban humanities can be viewed as a complex array of academic discourses, as sociology is described as a multi-paradigm science. First, urban humanities appeared in the academic world as a new kind of interdisciplinary research. Second, urban humanities provide narratives and historical knowledge for cities so that the placeness of city space could come into being or, if it already existed, be strengthened. Third, urban humanities offers a critical perspective to the urban entrepreneurialism in general and especially a construction-oriented growth coalition in Korea. Fourth, urban humanities function as an underlying logic for diverse action plan programs ranging from a Clemente course to humanistic city planning as the case of Suwon City shows. To conclude, I make some suggestions for further discussions.
