이 글은 국문학 연구의 한계를 넘어 학제간 연구인 도시인문학의 이론적 기초를 마련하기 위한 하나의 시론(試論)으로서, 도시를 문자 텍스트로 상정하는 통섭적 관점에서 도시시학의 가능성을 탐구한 것이다. 기존의 국문학 연구는 ‘민족-국가-국민’이라는 근대 네이션(nation) 체제에 기반하고 있었다. 그러나 지식의 정보화와 자본의 지구화는 이러한 체제를 붕괴시키고 도시와 지역(local) 단위로 세계를 재편시켰다. 요컨대 시장 권력이 국가 권력을 대체하면서 정치, 경제, 문화의 흐름이 도시와 지역을 거점으로 형성되기 시작한 것이다. 이 글에서는 이러한 변화에 대한 학문적 응전으로서 도시시학이 가능한 근거를 제시하고, 실제의 도시 공간인 청계천의 사례를 통해 그 가능성을 보여주고자 하였다. 도시시학의 근거는, 도시 주체에게 도시가 다양한 기호와 문자, 이야기와 경험으로 이루어진 의미체라는 사실에 토대를 둔다. 그것은 도시 주체에게 도시 고유의 심상지리를 형성하는데, 바로 이와 같은 은유 구조가 도시시학이 가능한 근거가 된다. 실제의 도시 공간과, 그 공간에 대한 텍스트, 그리고 이들에 대한 도시 주체의 심상지리는 문학 작품과 마찬가지로 일정한 은유 구조를 갖기 때문이다. 한 예로 ‘청계천=자연’ 또는 ‘청계천=인공’이라는 환상의 도식은 청계천이 문화화된 자연이면서 문화 너머의 자연이라는 잉여적 자질을 통해 이중으로 부정되며, 이를 통해 도시시학이 도시 주체를 반성케 하는 가능성을 보여준다. 한편 도시시학은 문학 속의 도시뿐 아니라 문학 밖의 도시도 텍스트로 삼기 때문에, 도시에 관한 인간의 상상(문학)과 기억(역사), 사유(철학)를 두루 아우르는 학제간 연구 또는 통섭적 연구를 지향함으로써 인문학 연구의 외연을 확장하는 데 기여할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper is an essay on preparation of theoretical basis for urban humanities, exploring the possibility of urban poetics from integrative perspective which introduces cities as letters of text. Existing studies on the Korean literature were based on modern nation system composed of 'nation-state-citizens.' However, transition of knowledge to information and global expansion of capital resulted in collapse of such system and reorganized the world based on city or local units. In short, replacement of government power by market power led to formation of political, economic and cultural flow with cities and local areas as the base. The purpose of this paper was to propose an evidence for possibility of urban poetics as an academic challenge against such changes and to demonstrate the possibility through the case of an actual urban space, Cheonggyecheon. Grounds for urban poetics are rooted in the fact that cities are composed of various symbols, letters, stories and experiences to urban subject. A unique imagined geography of the city is created for the urban subject, and such metaphorical structure is the basis for possibility of urban poetics. Actual urban space, texts about this space, and imagined geography about the actual space by urban subject form a certain metaphorical structure as in literary works. For example, an imaginary formula of 'Cheonggyecheon = Nature' or 'Cheonggyecheon = Man-made' creates a double negative through surplus characteristic of Cheonggyecheon that it is a culturalized nature and nature over culture at the same time. This shows possibility of urban poetics for leading the urban subject to self-reflection. On one hand, since urban poetics considers cities both in and outside the literature as text, the author attempts to contribute to expansion of humanities studies by aiming for an interdisciplinary or integrative study embracing human imagination(literature), memory(history) and reason(philosophy) on cities.
