Abstract
This paper investigates the conceptual framework to understand urban places and urban changes in the globalization process. It is necessary to examine the globalization discourses in order to figure out urban changes in the era of globalization. The discourses toward globalization can be briefly summarized into three different viewpoints including homogenization and convergence processes, material processes and outcomes out of globalization, and territorial view with emphasis on spatiality and scalar shift. The conceptual frameworks can be drawn out from both the causes of globalization such as market economy versus political subject, and outcomes of globalization such as global scale versus local scale. As a result, urban places and urban changes may be conceptualized from various concepts including spaces of flows, spaces of places, institutional spaces and new regionalism.
