Abstract
Since the middle of 1990s, Korean society has witnessed a structured reproduction of disparities in which various areas of inequalities such as income, assets, residence, education, culture, health etc. not only exist independently but reproduce themselves through intersectionality and generational transfer leading to a solid structure hard to reverse. Systemic reproduction of disparities is based on defective democracy after democratization, social ethics and collective action characterized by possessive individualism, and various institutions and policies that fail to curb inequalities. It is a autopoietic system and has a expansive nature resulting in irreducibility of complexity, which means that elimination of some elements that caused structured reproduction of disparities would not be an easy solution. It perpetuates unequal distribution of social risks between less vulnerable groups who take average risks with comfort and disadvantage groups who take high risks dangerously. It also reveals absence or weakness of regulation mode of disparities. While the oppressive mode of regulation monopolized by state in developmental dictatorship era is no longer valid, underdevelopment of inequality regulation within society brings about expanding disparities. With growing inequalities Korean society is going to a closed one, and socio-political significance of inequality would increase without precedent in contemporary Korean history.
