한때 한국사회에 양극화라는 것이 과연 존재하는가에 대한 논란들이 있기도 하 였지만, 현재는 양극화가 우리 사회의 가장 심각한 문제들 중 하나라는 점에 대해 모종의 사회적 합의가 형성되어 있는 것으로 보인다. 경우에 따라 일종의 ‘신(新)신분사회’의 도래로 규정되기도 하는 한국사회 양극화는 부와 사회적 지위가 세습되는 전 근대사회로의 ‘퇴행’을 연상시키고 있다. 이는 한국사회 민주주의 체제 자체에 대한 근본적인 도전이 제기되고 있음을 의미한다. 이 글의 일차적인 목적은 한국사회 양극화 현상에 대한 보다 적확한 분석과 대 안 모색을 위해서는 정의 개념을 분배 정의를 넘어 인정-무시 개념을 포괄할 수 있는 방식으로 보다 다차원적으로 규정할 필요가 있음을 지적하는 데에 있다. 이는 기존의 양극화 논의에 대한 규범 이론적 기초를 제공하고 한국사회 양극화 현상의 다차원적 성격을 이해하는 데에 기여할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 이러한 작업은 한국사회 양극화라는 사례를 중심으로 분배와 인정 개념을 둘러싼 비판이론 내부의 논쟁을 새롭게 평가해보는 데에도 기여할 수 있을 것이다. 이를 위해 아래에서는 먼저 한국사회 양극화에 대한 기존의 분석들을 통해서 우 리 사회 양극화의 실태와 원인에 대해서 검토할 것이다. 다음으로는 양극화에 관한 논의 일반이 정의론과 가지는 관계를 먼저 살펴본 후, 한국사회 양극화를 정확히 진단하고 이해하기 위해서는 정의의 내용을 보다 다차원적으로 구성할 필요가 있음을 지적할 것이다. 마지막으로는 결론을 대신하여 이상의 논의들이 가지는 의미를 검토하고 한국사회 양극화 극복을 위한 원칙적 방향을 모색해 본다.
Abstract
It seems to be a social consensus in Kora that social polarization now becomes one of the most serious social problems. The social polarization in Korea, often called the advent of ‘new caste society’, gives the impression of the regression to premodern society. If this is the case, it means the rise of great threats to Korean democracy. The aim of this thesis is to argue that it is necessary for the accurate diagnosis of social polarization in Korea to enlarge the concept of social justice. In other words, the theory of justice must be multi-dimensional to be able to treat both distributive injustices and social disrespect simultaneously. This work can contribute to providing the normative frame to the empirical studies on the social polarization in Korea, and help to understand the multi-dimensional character of it. Also it can contribute to reexamining the existing debates on the relation between recognition and redistribution in critical theory by concentrating on the concrete situation in Korea. For this aim, firstly, I examined the realities and causes of social polarization in Korea through the existing empirical researches. Secondly, I considered the general relation between the theory of justice and the discussion about social polarization, and then argued that it is necessary for accurate diagnosis of social polarization in Korea to enlarge the concept of social justice. Lastly, I explained the meanings of this work and suggested the principal directions of overcoming the social polarization in Korea.
