Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the educational changes in the ‘Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture’ of France in the 17th century and related details of the change. Founded in 1648, the Royal Academy of Art in France presented more systematic and regular lectures and education, under the influence of Italy, laying the foundation for many years for training artists. This study examined the mode and details of the education provided by the Academy to look into the education of the Academy in the 17th century. In addition, this study analyze the focus of discussion on the ideology of ‘André Felibien’ and ‘Roger de Piles’, who had significant influence on the Academy, including the lectures of ‘Charles Le Brun’, the most prominent author and educator of that era. The Royal Academy served the functions of holding the exhibitions and guaranteeing the social status, in addition to educational function. This study state various functions of the Royal Academy with a focus on the educational function of the Academy. The history of fine art academy, which began from the 16th century in the ‘Accademia del Disegno’, the Academy of Italy, can be considered to have taken root with the Royal Academy of France in the 17th century, which also influenced the formation of the academies and fine art circles in other European countries such as Germany and England at that time. The academies across Europe continued to increase until late 18th century, and particularly, laid foundation for education of artists within the boundary of tradition of Europe until the 20th century, although there was difference in the mode of drawings, plaster cast drawing, actual object drawing, depending on regions, with regards to education curriculums and methods. In addition, the Royal Academy of Art in France has had a great influence on Japanese art education, such as the Tokyo Art School, and this influence can be found throughout our art university education field. This study is meaningful in that it attempted to find the origin of fine art academy education and determine educational characteristics of that era.
