Abstract
In Pieter Bruegel’s Netherlandish Proverbs, more than a hundred proverbs are depicted. Interestingly, there are six proverbs describing excretion scenes such as defecation and urination, which is relatively a high number. Even though fecal matters were already used for satire and mischievous defiance in the Renaissance era, Bruegel’s use of excretion in his work seems to have some sense of provocativeness beyond such humorous effects. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to find out the value and meaning of excretion for Bruegel in the 16th century and reconsider it from the perspective of the present time. For this, content analysis of the proverbs on excretion was undertaken. As a result, the sense of humor was common in all the proverbs and the sense of resistance was found in three of them. The meaning of excretion depicted in proverbs was further discussed in the view of contemporary art. First, Bruegel’s excretion presents a sense of humor and a sense of resistance at the same time. Yet, the humor was a tool to restrain the sense of resistance coming up to the surface. Second, although the resistance is in the indirect form of expression, it is viewed as his intent. The twist from Bruegel is not as satisfying as the ones in contemporary art. Finally, the inducing speech function of the proverb seems a little bit skeptical. His experimental attitude is much to be desired from the contemporary art perspective. Nevertheless, an artist who can take charge of one’s society and the transformation is an initiative for change of public consciousness. This is a point where Bruegel from the Renaissance era and the contemporary artists meet in terms of creating a new trend in art history. Perhaps the elements of humor and resistance in Brugel’s work are continuously being represented in contemporary art with different styles.
