Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine a creative material-driven design process which is necessary for circular fashion. The domestic fashion industry is participating in a circular fashion through the process of sharing, repair/maintenance/prolong, reuse/redistribution, remanufacture/refurbishment and recycling. It is essential to consider and evaluate the circularity applicable to each stage of fashion production. It is considered that the material-driven design process based on the knowledge of textile application is needed especially for remanufacturing stage. Two previous studies are examined. The circular design guide studied by Ellen McArthur foundation and IDEO identified the elements and process for circular design. Van Bezooyen and Karana devised the methods and its process of the material-driven design methodology. Through analysing the previous studies, this study proposes theoretically ‘the Material-driven fashion design process’ which consists of three big stages; design development stage, sample production stage, and product release stage, and a total of seven detailed steps; Discover/Understand, Create, Define, Develop, Deliver, Share, and Collect. It is planned to allow designers to actively and creatively find and utilize resources at each stage, and to evaluate circulation as well as marketability at all stages. Through this design process, it is expected that resources can be saved, waste products can be used creatively, and designers can participate in the entire product process. The limited condition of utilizing the remained resources allows opportunities for new and unique materials. It is hoped that this circular material-driven design process will be proposed as a way of proposing the new way of thinking and process and fulfilling social responsibility to the fashion and textile industries and designers, and that it will provide ethical consumption opportunities to consumers to spread a sustainable consumption culture.
