Abstract
Nature has always been an important source of inspiration for humans. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the renowned German biologist Ernst Haeckel published Art Forms in Nature through his observations of natural objects. This study acknowledges the artistic value of Haeckel’s work, which had an impact on the fields of biology and art at the time, and aims to find the source of creation that can be applied to fashion design and turn it into art work, using Haeckel’s illustrations of natural objects as a motif. The research method is as follows. First, a literature review was conducted on the background of publication of Haeckel’s Art Forms in Nature, and the general characteristics and formative principles shown in the illustration of natural objects were observed for a total of 100 plates. Although Haeckel’s illustrations have already been explained by the principles of symmetry and order, further formative principles can be derived by observing the arrangement of the whole and the description of the shape of the parts. In Haeckel’s illustrations, the characteristic features of texture along with the various forms are revealed through the expression of various lines. Therefore it was possible to connect various linear expressions with the slash technique. Based on this, we tried to develop materials and produced a total of four fashion design works. According to the research results, six formative principles such as repetition, symmetry, gradation, rhythm, radiation, and emphasis were most prominent in Haeckel’s illustrations. In particular, repetition became the basic principle that made the other principles possible. On the other hand, the slash technique has been developed from the Renaissance period and is being applied to modern fashion design. The slash technique that appears in today’s fashion collections is mostly regular and applied straight lines. Based on the analysis results, the work of this study was designed by finding and designing the motifs of material development and silhouette, and produced a fashion design work that combined the six formative principles shown in Haeckel’s illustrations.
