Abstract
This study analyzed psych verb ‘Odoroku’ in the literary works which were written by Sōseki Natsume in the Meiji period. It focused on <Meaning>, <Structure> and <ル・タform> to analyze the aspects of translation which were restructured by translators. ‘Odoroku’ was mainly translated into verbs ‘Nollada’ and ‘surprise’ in Korean and English respectively. However, it was not always translated as it was suggested in the dictionary. In the case of the Korean translations, it was translated as the conclusion of events as well as the motional expressions of surprise. In the case of the English translations, the form of ‘passive of emotional verbs’ was mainly used and it tended to be used with verbs of thinking or dative verbs when it was used as a noun. The English translations showed examples which had the cause of emotion or expressions of emotion as the subject of sentences to make the owners of emotion realize something or judge something objectively. Aspects of translation according to expressions which worked as a predicate and a modifier in the shape of ‘ル・タform’ of ‘Odoroku’ were as follows. In the case of expressions which worked as a predicate, most of Korean translations except some examples were translated into similar tense with Japanese subjective psychological tense. However, English translations showed different aspects. ‘ル form’ used verbs of the present tense and an auxiliary verb ‘will’ more than verbs of the past tense according to the context of events. ‘タ form’ had examples which used verbs of the present tense but verbs of the past tense were used more often. In the case of expressions which worked as a modifier, Korean translations dealt with ‘ル form and タ form’ by using both ‘ㄹ’ and ‘ㄴ’. English translation dealt with ‘ル form’ and ‘タ form’ by setting a specific time and using expressions such as verbs of the past tense, the present tense and the present perfect tense.
