Abstract
This study examines how differences between remote learning platforms influence learners’ sense of presence, engagement, and immersion in a cross-border online learning environment, and explores the educational implications from the perspective of Self-Determination Theory (SDT). To address these issues, the study analyzes a course titled “Korean Affairs,” taught remotely by an instructor based in Korea at a Japanese university. The course employed a comparative design using the same group of learners. In the first half of the semester, Microsoft Teams served as a lecture-centered environment that emphasized information sharing. In the second half, the metaverse-based platform ZEP was introduced to support small-group, interaction-oriented activities. Survey data were analyzed using both quantitative measures (presence, participation, satisfaction) and qualitative coding of open-ended responses. The findings indicate that ZEP enhanced learners’ autonomy and relatedness through visual immersion and avatar-based interaction, thereby increasing motivation. In contrast, Teams supported learners’ sense of competence by providing clear information delivery and structural stability. These results suggest that the quality of learning experiences is shaped not simply by the technological efficiency of a platform but by the alignment between instructional practices tailored to the characteristics of each medium and learners’ psychological needs. The study underscores the importance of designing remote courses that account for presence and the fulfillment of intrinsic motivational needs, and it provides practical implications for instructional design in cross-border remote education.
