Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify how the level of spatial movement (more movement, less movement, no movement) affects the learning presence and interest development in college students' online class activities using the metaverse platform(www.virbela.com). The experiment was conducted with students taking credit exchange courses among nine flagship national universities(www.knu9.or.kr). The students who participated in the experiment were 150 students from 9 national universities. Only 68 subjects who participated in pre-training, covariate measurement, and experiment (3 times) were analyzed. Independent variables in this study had three levels of (A) a lot of movement (21 persons), (B) little movement (20 persons), and (C) no movement (27 persons) by the level of spatial movement. We repeated the experiment with three instructional conditions. The dependent variable in this study was learning presence and interest development. The learning presence was composed of social presence and spatial presence. The learning presence is a user's perception of social relationships and spatial perception with other learners synchronously participating to the online learning. Also, interest development is to investigate the level of individual interest development in online learning situations. According to the study results, the level of spatial movement did not affect the sense of social presence. However, the mobility in the learning space had a significant impact on spatial learning presence, and it was significantly improved as the rounds were repeated. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in interest development. Considerations for using the metaverse educationally were discussed.
