Abstract
This paper analyzes total reduplication and emphatic mora augmentation in Japanese mimetic words within the framework of Optimality Theory. It is assumed that two types of morphological structure in total reduplication of mimetics ― head initial with suffixal reduplicant (base + RED) and head final with prefixal reduplicant (RED + base). Akashi(2007) argued that emphatic mora augmentation of total reduplication can be predicted only by assuming head final structure. However, I will show that head initial is the right structure of total reduplication of mimetics with two arguments: that is, derivational paradigm of mimetic word (i.e., suffixation), and the relation with partial reduplication of mimetics. And I will account for the emphatic mora augmentation of total reduplication with head initial structure by assuming OO-correspondence.
