Abstract

『Yeonggasamijeop』 is a collection of poetry and prose by the three brothers Hong Seok-ju, Hong Gil-ju, and Hong Hyeon-ju of the Pungsan Hong clan—one of the prominent literary families of the metropolitan noron faction in the nineteenth century. Examination of the brothers’ poems in 『Yeonggasamijeop』 reveals both commonalities and distinctive differences. All three writers inherited a traditional literary view that emphasized the unity of the morality and literature and subordinated literature to the morality, stressing the inseparability of writing from moral principle. They placed prose above poetry, warned against excessive techniques or embellishment in poetic creation, criticized contemporary literary customs for corruption and decline, and held that poetry must embody sincerity arising from the human mind and a natural, unforced quality. Within this shared framework, however, the three brothers displayed differing perspectives regarding the status of poetry versus prose, poetic form, the social utility of literature, and methods of poetic composition. Hong Seok-ju focused on poetry’s social usefulness. In composing poems, he not only restrained rhetorical ornamentation but also sought to move beyond common structural constraints of Classical Chinese poetry such as tonal regulations. Hong Gil-ju, by contrast, emphasized personal emotion over social utility, creating poems characterized by bold spirit, purity of mind, and unrestrained freedom. Yet he shared with Hong Seok-ju the tendency to avoid ornate rhetorical devices and to transcend conventional tonal restrictions. Hong Hyeon-ju displayed an even more personalized and internalized poetic orientation than Hong Gil-ju, differing from both of his brothers. The personalized, introspective emotions in his work appear in a lyrical and sentimental mode, privileging subtle emotional resonance rather than the vigor and spirit found in Hong Gil-ju’s poetry, and thus diverging from both Hong Seok-ju’s and Hong Gil-ju’s styles. Nevertheless, like his brothers, he valued factuality over literary ornamentation.
