Abstract
This article examines Pal-ae Sahoe-si(八哀四懷詩), a sequence of five-character ancient-style poems (五言古詩) composed by Nam Yong-ik(南龍翼), focusing on its characters, historical background, and literary characteristics. In doing so, it analyzes how Du Fu(杜甫)’s Pal-ae shi (八哀詩) and Gwon Pil(權韠)’s Sahoe shi (四懷詩) were received and transformed in Nam’s work. The figures depicted in Pal-ae Sahoe-si were leading members of the Seoin faction who shared close political and personal ties with the poet. The poem was composed against the backdrop of intense political strife between the Seoin(西人) and Namin(南人) factions, particularly following the political downfall of the Seoin, which left the author in a precarious position. While Pal-ae Sahoe-si was clearly influenced by Du Fu’s Pal-ae shi and Gwon Pil’s Sahoe shi, its mode of reception reveals distinct features. Du Fu’s poem mourns eight deceased friends amid wartime turmoil, whereas Gwon Pil’s work expresses separation from and longing for four living friends. Nam Yong-ik’s poem encompasses both mourning for eight deceased friends and parting from four living ones; however, its creative impetus derives not from direct warfare but from political crisis and the author’s acute awareness of contemporary factional conflict. In terms of structure and rhetorical strategy, Pal-ae Sahoe-si draws upon the formal conventions and expressive techniques of its predecessors while distinguishing itself by foregrounding the lineage and ancestral prestige of the subjects prior to praising their talents and virtues. This approach closely resembles epitaphic and biographical prose traditions, emphasizing the social origins and legitimacy of the individuals portrayed. Moreover, the poem develops its emotional trajectory through the poet’s personal memories and sentiments, revealing a strong affinity with Gwon Pil’s Sahoe shi. In this respect, Pal-ae Sahoe-si serves as a significant example of how Nam Yong-ik inherited and creatively transformed the poetic traditions of Du Fu and Gwon Pil. While maintaining the conventional motifs of elegy and commendation within the framework of five-character ancient-style verse, the poem vividly articulates the poet’s sense of political anxiety and shared identity with his peers amid an unstable political climate. Additionally, from the perspective of late Joseon historical poetry, from the mid-seventeenth century onward, five-character ancient-style poems increasingly emphasized narrativity and narrative development, and Pal-ae Sahoe-si is particularly significant as a work that concretely exemplifies this development.
