Abstract

This paper examines the transformations that the introduction of digital technologies has brought to Korean literary research, education, and institutionalization from the 2010s through the 2020s. At the center of these shifts lie the rapid advances in language models and the accompanying issues of cultural bias and the digital divide, which together highlight the growing importance of sovereign AI as both a response and an expanding trend. Within this context, computational analytical methods—particularly computational stylistics and sentiment and sensory analyses, which have been applied to the works of Yi Kwang-su and Yeom Sang-seop—are opening new avenues for interpretation in Korean literary studies. Attempts to extend computational stylistics into sentiment and sensory analyses, and to link these approaches with affect theory, remain in their early stages. Nevertheless, they carry significant meaning as efforts to supplement the limitations of quantitative analysis and deepen conceptual inquiry. On the educational and institutional fronts, models of digital humanities education are emerging through inter-university collaborations, while the institutionalization of digital humanities is accelerating in faculty hiring and international academic exchange. However, the expansion of digital humanities and its connection to established traditions of Korean literary scholarship—particularly the rich discussions of national literature—remain insufficiently integrated, leaving an important gap to be addressed. This paper analyzes the structural changes that digital technologies bring to the broader field of Korean literary studies and explores the new possibilities introduced by sovereign AI and computational methodologies, ultimately outlining a prospective domain of “digital Korean literature.”
