Abstract
At the beginning of the 20th century, artists from around the world flocked to Paris. Many Jewish artists from Central Europe—including Lifshitz, Manet-Katz, Chagall, Soutine, Zadkin, Kikoin, and Kashlis— settled there. This article explores why Baltic artists were drawn to Paris, focusing on their identities and artistic expression. Artists from the Baltic region experienced a process of self-perception shaped by the external spatial transformation of Paris—a space of intellect and freedom. They faced identity confusion resulting from the collapse of the self-continuity they had acquired through social stigmas and the symbolic systems of their national communities. Through this, they arrived at moments of subjective self-awareness, enabling them to objectively assess their emotions and circumstances. This paper examined how Baltic artists came to recognize their own existence within the political, social, and cultural conditions of Paris. From the perspective of the sociological concept of identity, this paper draws the following conclusions. First, the integration of the artist's personal life and social conditions into their artistic worldview is the result of a continuous process of fragmentation and reconciliation between self-awareness and the image of the other. Second, art can be understood as both a consequence of the artist’s identity crisis and the expression of a fluid, ever-changing identity.
