이 논문에서 필자는 정치적 자유와 예술적 자유의 관계를 프랑스 화가 마네를 중심으로 살펴본다. 프랑스 화가 에두아르 마네에 대한 형식주의적 해석에 따르면 마네는 정치적인 문제에는 관심이 없고 예술적인 면에서는 당대의 근대화로 인해 출현한 모더니티를 눈에 보이는 대로 재현하려는 시각적 사실주의자이거나, 미술 자체의 문제에 관심을 가지는 형식주의자이다. 필자는 마네에 대한 이런 형식주의 적 해석에 반대해서 마네가 다비드처럼 공화주의자이고, 기본적으로 쿠르베처럼 사 회적 사실주의자인데 이에서 더 나아가 마네는 쿠르베의 사회적 사실주의를 비판적 으로 발전시켜 심리적 깊이가 있는 사회적 사실주의를 성취했다고 논한다. 이런 논 지를 전개하기 위해서 필자는 예술사회학적 방법을 사용해서 마네가 활동하던 시기 의 정치와 예술적 상황을 개관하고, 마네가 자신의 공화주의를 사회적 사실주의를 통해 어떻게 구현했는지를 그의 작품의 분석을 통해 밝힌다.
Abstract
In this paper, I consider the relationship between political freedom and artistic freedom through French Painter Eduard Manet. According to formalist interpretation of Manet, politically he is not interested in politics, artistically he is a visual realist who tries to represent modernity as it looks to his eyes, or formalist who is interested only in the problems of art itself. Against this formalist interpretation, I argue that politically Manet is a republican like J. L. David, and artistically he is basically a social realist like G. Courbet. But critically developing Courbet’s social realism, he accomplishes social realism with psychological depth. To support my thesis, I use the method of sociology of art to survey the political and artistic situations of the age in which Manet work as an artist, and illuminates how he realizes his republicanism through social realism by analyzing his works of art.
