Abstract

This article strives to show Marc Chagall understood his identity as a Jew and how Jewish themes are portrayed in his works of art, as well as how he went beyond his ethnic limitation to realize and achieve his very uniquely own creative and original works of art. The scope of this research will include years after 1922 when Chagall moved to France, typically identified as the mid-to-late period of Chagall’s category art. During the early twentieth century, many Russian Jewish artists and writers including Chagall, provided abundant perspectives and various point of views to Russian culture as they led Jewish Renaissance in Russia. Even if the uniqueness and strength of Jewish culture and art taken into consideration, there is no denying in that the fertile soil of Russian art and culture became the main factor that led to the blossoming of Jewish culture and art. Russia’s profound knowledge of culture and art became an integral catalyst for the Russian Jewish art and made new genre in Jewish fine arts possible. Ultimately what made the emergence of prominent artists such as Chagall possible was the union that occurred between the cultural and artistic base of Russia and the intrinsic ethical culture of the Jews. At around this time in France where the creative freedom was secured, it is ironic that Chagall’s bold experimental creativity in his paintings seems to have disappeared. Although Chagall maintained his previous drawing techniques, his bold cubist style coul no longer be witnessed in his paintings. Compared to his time in Russia, it became clearly evident that his tendency was even more conspicuous after his visit to Israel and the U.S. In the end it can be said that for Chagall, the interfusing of Russian culture and Jewish culture has come to result in dynamic relationship created in their incompatibilities.
