Abstract
This paper explores the potential of the Bible, regarded as a classic work, to serve as a universal subject in liberal arts education. In contemporary educational settings, the Bible is often excluded from general curricula due to its status as a sacred text of living religions. However, in light of the declining number of religious adherents and the growing importance of religious literacy, there is an increasing need to reconsider the Bible as a valuable educational resource within the liberal arts. To this end, the paper first examines how the concept of “the classic” has developed over time and investigates the educational value the Bible may hold today when approached as a classic within the context of liberal arts education. It then examines the necessary conditions for implementing the Bible as a classic work, focusing on learners, instructors, and the broader educational community. Finally, given the low level of religious literacy among contemporary learners, the paper proposes that the education of the Bible as a classic work should address four key dimensions: basic knowledge, interdisciplinary approaches, ethical applications, and cultural interpretation.
