사마천은 자신이 엄선한 인물을 중요도에 따라 본기, 세가, 열전에 나누어 수록했다. 이 중 세가에는 천자를 보필한 신하들의 행적을 담았다. 본고에서는 유방을 도와 한 왕조를 건국한 개국공신 중, 세가의 첫머리에 있는 소하에 대한사마천의 평가를 고찰했다. 秦의 하급 관리 출신인 소하는 유방이 평민이었을때부터 서로 알고 지냈으며, 그가 기의한 이후에는 항우를 물리치고 통일할 때까지 줄곧 성실하게 보좌했다. 그 결과 유방이 손꼽은 세 명의 공신 중 다른 두명, 장량, 한신을 누르고 최고 공적을 인정받아 일등 공신의 반열에 오른다. ‘특이한 절조가 없었으나, 유방의 후광을 입고 직무를 성실히 수행했으며, 민심에 순응했다. 왕조 초기의 숙청을 피했으며, 최고의 지위에 올라 명성이 후대까지전해졌다.’라는 사마천의 평가는 그의 일생을 명료하게 요약했다. 다만 그 안에서 ‘특이한 절조가 없다’라는 언급, 명성을 논하면서 소하를 굉요나 산의생에비교한 점은 주목할 만하다. 본고는 이 점에 착안하여 ｢소상국세가｣의 ‘太史公 曰’의 내용을 분석했다.
Abstract
Sima Qian divided his carefully selected figures into benji, shijia, and liezhuan. Among these, shijia contains the deeds of the ministers who assisted the emperor. In this paper, we examine Sima Qian's evaluation of Xiao He, who is listed at the beginning of shijia, among the founding officials who helped Liu Bang establish the Han Dynasty. Xiao He, a low-ranking official of the Qin Dynasty, had known Liu Bang since he was a commoner, and after he joined the Qin dynasty, he faithfully assisted him until he defeated Xiang Yu and unified the country. As a result, he was recognized for his greatest achievements, beating out Zhang Liang and Han Xin. Sima Qian's evaluation of Xiao He is interesting. ‘He had no special integrity, but he carried out his duties faithfully under the aura of the king’s authority and was obedient to the public sentiment. He avoided the purges of the early dynasty, rose to the highest position, and his reputation was passed down to later generations. This assessment sums up his life well, but at the same time leaves us with something to think about.
