르포 기자 출신 작가 후안 마드리드는 당대에 일어나는 일을 기록하고 고발하기 위한 목적으로 흑색소설을 쓰는 대표적인 작가이다. 그는 그가 기자 시절 취재했던 많은 사건을 바탕으로 소설을 썼기에 그의 소설들은 매우 사실주의적이며 각각의 작품마다 다양하고 뚜렷한 주제로 스페인 현대사회를 고발하고 있다. 그중에서도 특히 경찰은 그의 모든 작품에 거의 빠짐없이 등장하고 있는데 후안 마드리드의 토 니 로마노 시리즈 중 여섯 번째 작품인 『야간 순찰대』는 경찰의 부패와 당시 경찰과 권력층과의 관계 속에서 스페인 현대사회의 많은 사건에 경찰이 개입하고 있음 을 보여준다. 경찰들이 범죄자들에게 압수한 물품을 뒤로 빼돌려 되팔거나 혹은 범죄자들의 불법 거래를 눈감아준 대신 대가를 받으면서 제2의 수입을 챙기는 것 외 에도 마드리드 라바피에스의 젠트리피케이션과 경찰과 부동산 투기 자본과의 결탁을 고발한다. 또한 『야간 순찰대』에서는 이렇게 부패한 경찰조직이 주인공 토니에 의해 탄생한 것임을 보여주는 반전을 보이는데 카베스타니 증후군을 앓고 있는 토니 개인의 기억이 조작될 수 있고 불완전하다는 것을 상기시키며 독자들에게 과거 를 망각하고 있는 스페인 사회의 또 다른 현실을 일깨워 주는 장치로 작용한다. 전 직 경찰 출신 토니는 잃어버린 기억을 되찾는 과정에서 자신의 부정한 과거를 마주 하며 그의 과거의 모든 행동이 잘못되었음을 깨닫는 작품 속의 유일한 인물로 독자 들에게 그가 앞으로 바른길을 찾아갈 것이라는 희망을 보여주기도 한다. 이렇게 이 작품은 스페인 경찰의 조직적인 부정부패를 보여주는 것 이외에도 한 인간의 기억이 조작될 수 있으며 개인의 기억은 잊을 수 있지만, 집단적 기억은 잊혀질 수 없음을 보여준다. 또한 이러한 집단적 기억을 통해 기억의 위기에 처해있는 스페인 사회가 잊고 있는 역사적 사실을 다시 기억하고 과거의 오류를 깨달아야 토니처럼 미래에 그러한 일을 반복하지 않을 것이라는 중요한 메시지도 스페인 사회에 던져 줌으로써 흑색소설의 사회적 기능을 잘 완수하고 있다.
Abstract
Juan Madrid, a journalist-turned-writer, is a representative writer of Spanish black novel for the purpose of recording and accusing events of the time. He wrote novels based on many events that he covered when he was a journalist, so his novels are very realistic and accuse contemporary Spanish society of various and distinct themes in each work. Among them, the police appear in almost all of his works. Grupo de noche, the sixth work of Juan Madrid's Toni Romano series, deals with many incidents in contemporary Spanish society in relation to the corruption of the police and the relationship between the police and the powerful at the time. The police either sell back confiscated goods from criminals, or take a second income in return for implied illegal transactions by criminals. It also accuses the gentrification taking place in Lavapiés, Madrid, and collusion between the police and real estate speculative capital. In addition, Grupo de noche shows a twist that this corrupt police organization was created by the main character Toni, reminding readers that Toni's personal memories can be manipulated and are incomplete since hesissuffering from Cavestani Syndrome. it serves as a device to remind us of another reality in Spanish society. Toni, a former police officer, is the only person in the work who realizes that all his past actions were wrong while facing his past in the process of recovering his lost memories. In this way, apart from showing the systematic corruption of the Spanish police, this work also shows that a person's memory can be manipulated and that individual memories can be forgotten, but collective memories cannot be forgotten. In this way, Grupo de noche effectively fulfills the social function as a Spanish black novel. It throws an important message to Spanish society, urging them not to repeat the same mistakes as Toni did. When a society is facing a crisis of memories, it becomes crucial to remember forgotten historical facts and acknowledge past errors. The novel serves as a reminder that collective memories should not be overlooked or manipulated, and that society should strive to learn from the past to shape a better future.
