Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine sexual oppression on women caused by women’s identity bestowed by men, thanks to the capital governed by men, in a Mexican writer Rosario Castellanos(1925-1974)’ poem “Kinsey Report”(1972). Paradying Alfred Kinsey’s report with the same name Kinsey Report(1948, 1953), Castellanos constructs the poem with interviews with six Mexican women, each in different situation ̄a married woman, a single woman, a divorced woman, an ascetic woman, a lesbian, and a young lady ̄, talking about their sexual behaviors to the interviewer. Previous studies mostly indicate that in the poem Castellanos demonstrates that women living in Mexico do not live as sexual beings, which contradicts Kinsey Report’s results, and are sexually oppressed due to the patriarchal Mexican culture. This present work insists that, beyond what’s generally called patriarchal culture, Castellanos in the poem points out that, because of the economic structure where the capital is governed mainly by men, the unequal rights in sexual relationship in Mexican women’s life persists. It’s because, through the conspiracy between capitalism and patriarchy, men were able to bestow an image of ideal woman as patient, passive and submissive one and woman’s use value as a wife or a whore, and to make women to internalize those identities. The present study then introduces socialist feminism that studies the conspiracy between the capitalism and patriarchy and, finally proves that Castellanos does the same social criticism in “Kinsey Report” as the socialist feminists do in their theories.
