초록
Abstract
Since Rivero’s study in 1986, it has been widely accepted that the clitics in Medieval Spanish are phrasal elements that often separate from the verb and must encliticize to any constituent to their left, while in Modern Spanish they are considered heads that attach to the verb. In this study, we will analyze the possibility of studying the clitics in both medieval and modern periods under a unified approach. Our results will demonstrate that the clitics in both periods are true pronominal arguments in thematic position. Furthermore, we will argue that the clitics move as head from their base position to T, where they attach as bound morphemes to satisfy the morphosyntactic nature of clitization, which has been proposed as the most economical and minimal derivation from a diachronic and configurational perspective. In fact, the clitics as lexical elements are not subject to parametrization, implying that their nature and syntactic characterization have not changed from the medieval period to the present day.
