Abstract
Juan Madrid’s eight-part black novel, Tony Romano series, has been published steadily for as long as 30 years, starting with the first work Un beso de amigo in 1980, during the democratic transition in Spain, and Bares nocturnos in 2009, the last work in the millennium. With Tony Romano as the main character, the series features the same characters centered around the Malasaña region of Madrid, reflecting the years with their narratives. In particular, the Malasaña area, which is the background of the Tony Romano series, which was born during the Spanish democratic transition, was always an old town where low-class people lived and were not developed, and it was introduced as an area with old houses and buildings, cheap bars and brothels. However, the last work, Bares nocturnos, shows the newly reorganized Malasaña, and the contrast from the past is remarkable. Therefore, seeing how Malasaña, Madrid’s poorest and most historical region, has been reborn from the Movida era to the present as the “Malasaña brand” in the Millennium, would be an interesting way to look at Madrid’s yesterday and today from a literary and sociological perspective.
