Cuentas Pendientes, the fifth work of Juan Madrid's Tony Romano series published in 1995, denounces the atrocities of Spain's Franco-era secret police, which he tenaciously covered, and shows the benefits from the 'Amnesty Act' enacted during the transition period of Spain's democracy. And it shows the process of them being incorporated into a democratic police system through corrupt power and accumulating enormous wealth. In fact, in Spain, it was only in the 21st century that the public effort to ‘correct the past history’ began, and as a result of these efforts, the ‘Democratic Memory Act’ was finally enacted in October 2022. Therefore, since last year, hidden stories of the Franco era began to surface in earnest, and politicians and the media began to take them to court, focusing on the figures who served as secret police officers during the Franco era. In view of this trend of the times, Juan Madrid's Cuentas Pendientes, published in 1995, can be seen as a courageous move by a writer ahead of his time and was a fact that must be revealed in Spain someday. Therefore, this work can be seen as another record of Juan Madrid's contemporary Spanish society, which showed the truth hidden within the Spanish society he wanted to expose through his black novel.
