Abstract
This study provides an in-depth analysis of the intellectual impact of the Trump era and “Trumpism” on the Chinese academic community and the subsequent shifts in the discourse on U.S.-China relations. Chinese academia perceives the Trump presidency as a fundamental and irreversible turning point, marking the end of the four-decade-long U.S. “engagement policy” and the beginning of an era of “strategic competition.” According to the research, Chinese scholars analyzed Trumps leadership as a complex phenomenon blending “transactionalism” and “narcissism,” and interpreted the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement as a symptom of deep-seated structural changes within the U.S. and a transformation of its hegemonic identity. Specifically, the Trump administrations trade and technology wars against China were viewed as an all-encompassing pressure campaign to contain its rise, which paradoxically prompted China to accelerate its pursuit of technological self-sufficiency and domestic-led development under the banner of “self-strengthening”(自强). This study highlights the spectrum of intellectual discourse within China by comparing the distinct analytical frameworks of prominent scholars such as Yan Xuetong’s theory of a “bipolar order,” Wang Jisi’s emphasis on “domestic politics,” and Shi Yinhong’s “structural trend” thesis. In conclusion, the paper argues that the shock of the Trump era has entrenched a deep-seated pessimism and a realist worldview within Chinese academia, compelling it to abandon expectations of the U.S.-led order and forge an independent strategy for long-term competition, thereby representing a critical juncture in international relations.
