Abstract
This study investigates kinship terms in modern Chinese dialects from the perspective of cultural linguistics, with a particular focus on the spouse (夫婦) and descendant (後代) categories. Building upon the previous research by Min and Park (2024), which analyzed the “parent” and “grandparent” groups, this paper explores how dialectal kinship terms reflect and transmit traditional Chinese cultural concepts such as family hierarchy, patriarchal lineage, and Confucian ethics. The data are drawn from The Linguistic Atlas of Chinese Dialects: Lexicon Volume (2008), covering 930 dialect sites across 33 provinces and municipalities in China. Ten representative Chinese characters frequently used in kinship terms—漢, 夫, 男, 婆, 內, 小, 細, 女, 媳, and 婿—are analyzed in terms of their graphical forms (字形), semantic values (字義), and geographical distributions. Through comparative lexical and cultural analyses, the study identifies regional variations between northern and southern dialects and reveals how linguistic usage embodies localized cultural cognition. The findings indicate that Chinese kinship terms are not merely lexical labels but symbolic carriers of social order and cultural ideology. Elements such as age hierarchy, gender asymmetry, and family ethics remain deeply embedded in the linguistic structure. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the interaction between language and culture in Chinese society and provides a foundation for integrating cultural linguistics into broader studies of Chinese dialectology and sociolinguistics.
