An Analysis of the Intermediate and Advanced Level Chinese KFL Learners’ Selection Factors of ‘가’ and ‘는’

This paper aims to investigate Chinese KFL learners’ usage patterns of the Korean particles ‘가’ and ‘는’. Much scholarly work has shown that it is challenging for KFL learners to differentiate ‘가’ and ‘는’ and use them correctly. Through the analysis of the Chinese KFL learner corpus, this study tries to verify potential factors that affect the learners' selection of the two particles. After reviewing the related studies, the following potential selection factors are selected: 1)sentence constituent of preceding noun phrase, 2)types of sentences and clauses, 3)animacy of preceding noun phrase, 4)givenness of preceding noun phrase, and 5)types of predicative. The results of the study imply that all of these factors are related to the selection of ‘가’ and ‘는’. First, ‘가’ is preferably used with subject, complement, and object, while ‘는’ is often used with subject and adverbial. Second, ‘가’ is preferred to ‘는’ in subordinate and embedded clauses. Third, ‘가’ often follows inanimate object, while ‘는’ often comes after animate object. Fourth, ‘가’ is preferably selected with new information, while ‘는’ is often chosen with given information. Lastly, ‘가’ is often used with adjectives and ‘있다/없다’, while ‘는’ is used with ‘이다’ and predicate clauses.
