어머니의 마음 읽어내기가 영아-어머니 정서적 가용성에 미치는 영향

초록

본 연구는 어머니의 영아에 대한 마음 읽어내기(mind-mindedness)와 영아-어머니 정서적 가용성 (emotional availability)의 양상 및 어머니의 마음 읽어내기가 영아-어머니 정서적 가용성에 미치는 영향에 대해 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 연구대상은 생후 11-13개월 영아 29명과 그들의 어머니 29명이며, 연구에 사용한 도구는 Meins와 Fernyhough(2012)의 ‘마음 읽어내기 코딩 매뉴얼(MindMindedness Coding Manual)’과 Biringen(2008)의 ‘정서적 가용성 척도(Emotional Availability Scale)’ 였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 어머니는 영아의 마음과 관련된 적절한 발화를 전체 발화 대비 4.61% 정도로 하는 것으로 나타났으며, 마음과 관련된 적절하지 않은 발화는 전체 발화 대비 1.42% 정도로 하는 것으로 나타났다. 정서적 가용성은 7점 만점에 5.56점으로 높은 편이었다. 둘째, 어머니의 영아 마음에 대한 적절한 발화는 영아-어머니 정서적 가용성 전체 및 정서적 가용성의 하위 영역 중 어머니의 민감성과 비계설정, 영아의 반응과 참여에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과들은 영아-어머니 관계의 질을 높이기 위해 어머니는 영아의 마음에 주의를 기울이고, 그 마음을 영아의 입장에서 이해하 고자 노력하며, 언어로 반영해 주는 것이 필요함을 시사한다.

Abstract

This study aimed at examining the overall aspects of mother’s mind-mindedness and infant-mother emotional availability, and the effects of mothers’ mind-mindedness on infant-mother emotional availability. The subjects in this study were 29 infants (11 to 13 month olds) and their mothers. The instruments used were ‘Mind-Mindedness Coding’ by Meins and Fernyhough (2012) and ‘Emotional Availability Scales’ by Biringen (2008). The findings of the study were as follows. First, 4.61% of the total comments made by the mothers were appropriately mind-related, while 1.42% of them were non-attuned mind-related. The scores of infant-mother emotional availability averaged 5.56 out of 7. Second, the mothers’ appropriate mind-related comments showed a statistically significant influence on the total score of infant-mother emotional availability, as well as some subcategories such as mothers’ sensitivity and scaffolding and infants’ responsiveness and involvement. These findings suggest that in order to improve the quality of infant-mother relationships, mothers should pay attention to the infant’s mind, try to understand it from the view of the infant, and verbalize it.
