영아의 정서조절 유형과 영아-어머니 정서적 가용성의 양상 및 관계

본 연구는 영아의 정서조절 유형과 영아-어머니 정서적 가용성의 양상 및 관계를 살펴보는데 목적이 있었다. 연구대상은 S시와 A시에 거주하는 생후 11-13개월의 영아 30명과 그들의 어머니 30명이었다. 연구도구로는 영아의 정서조절 유형을 알아보기 위해 Martins, Soares, Martins, Tereno와 Osorio(2012)가 사용한 ‘모양 맞추기 과제(the Shape Sorter Task)’를 변형하여 사용하고, 영아-어머니의 정서적 가용성을 측정하기 위해 Biringen(2008)이 개발한 Emotional Availability Scale(EAS) 4판을 사용하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 영아의 정서조절 유형의 양상은 과소 정서조절, 적응 정서조절, 과잉 정서조절 순으로, 과소나 적응 정서조절 유형에 비해 과잉 정서조절 유형에 해당하는 영아의 비율이 낮았다. 둘째, 영아-어머니 정서적 가용성은 보통 이상의 수준으로 나타났으며, 어머니의 학력과 영아의 성별 및 출생순위에 따라 유의한 차이가 있었다. 셋째, 영아의 정서조절 유형에 따라 영아-어머니 정서적 가용성 중 비방해, 참여에 유의한 차이가 있었다. 이러한 결과들은 영아의 정서조절 유형에 특별한 관심을 가질 필요가 있으며, 영아와 그들의 상호작용을 지원하기 위한 성인의 반응적 역할이 필수적임을 시사한다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine aspects of infants’ emotion regulation styles and infant-mother emotional availability and the relationships between the two. The subjects in this study were 30 infants (between 11 and 13 month olds) and their mothers living in S and A cities. As research instruments, a revised version of the Shape Sorter Task developed by Martins, Soares, Martins, Tereno, and Osorio (2012) was utilized in order to identify infants’ styles of emotion regulation, and the Emotional Availability Scale (EAS, 4th ed.) developed by Biringen (2008) was used in order to measure emotional availability between infant and mother. The findings of the study were as follows: First, in terms of the number of infants in each style of emotion regulation, there were under-regulation, adaptive style, and over-regulation in descending order; that is, the ratio of infants in over-regulation was lower than the ratio of those in under-regulation or adaptive style. Second, the level of infant-mother emotional availability was above average, and significant deferences were found depending on mothers’ education level and infants’ gender and birth order. Third, infants’ styles of emotion regulation were significantly related to maternal nonintrusiveness and infant involvement among the subordinate factors of emotional availability. These results imply that special attention is needed to infants’ emotion over-regulation, and adults’ responsive role is essential for infants and their interactions.
