Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain the socio-economic context of the publicness of child care service by reviewing the existing theoretical backgrounds and previous research and to analyze the socio-economic context of the publicness of child care service using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis. The socio-economic context of the public child care service is the lower risk of low fertility, child poverty, and high level of public social expenditure. Some countries with public child care service show the equal gender role attitude, developed service industry and high level of female labour force participation. There is some consensus on the public child care service but it differs as to the level of publicness of child care service according to the social context. Especially, the level of publicness of child care service of Korea is very low. The significance of this study is to find that socio-economic context of the publicness of child care service is high rate of female economic activity, low risk of low fertility, and equal gender role attitude using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis.
