Abstract

This study examines the usage of MONONO as a conjunctive particle and aims to clarify its syntactic and semantic characteristics. Following Ishiguro (1999), the usage of MONONO can be broadly divided into two types: one that forms adversative relation based on three presuppositions, and another that does not—namely, the annotation usage, which provides supplementary information. This study focuses on the continuity between these usages and observes the common properties of MONONO. In modern Japanese, MONONO is typically used to express a adversative relation between events, in which the consequent presents a situation incompatible with what can be inferred from the antecedent or preceding context. However, it does not necessarily express this adversative relation explicitly or strongly. Rather, MONONO is acceptable as long as a certain discrepancy is perceived between the two situations, or if the antecedent does not align with the contextual flow. Therefore, it is rarely used in cases of mere coordination or temporal succession—a feature that clearly distinguishes it from GA or KEREDOMO. Furthermore, in sentences containing MONONO, the two events are not contrasted with equal weight; instead, the emphasis lies on the consequent. As such, the event expressed in the subordinate clause introduced by MONONO tends to function in an additional or annotative manner to support the description of the consequent. At the end of the main clause, not only assertive forms but also sentence-final expressions such as those conveying conjecture, doubt, or desire may occur. However, interrogative or directive forms are unlikely to appear.
