Abstract

This study analyzes male speech as it appears in Meiji(明治)-era novels, Newspapers, and Rakugo(落語), through a sociolinguistic perspective that considers discourse and contextual scenes. The findings reveal that the most salient linguistic markers of gender difference are personal pronouns, particularly first-person pronouns. Gender distinctions also emerge in sentence-final expressions, including sentence-ending particles, as well as in interjections, response markers, and suffixes predominantly used by men. These observations provide a more multidimensional and dynamic understanding of the nature and characteristics of male speech during the Meiji period. Male speech in the Meiji era evolved from the Samurai speech(samurai register:武士語) of the Edo(江戸) period, passing through the speech of the Shizoku (warrior class:士族), and later transforming into the language of scholars:Shosei-go (書生語): and Bureaucratic language(官員語). From a sociolinguistic perspective, the language of the middle and upper classes formed the foundation of the Tokyo standard dialect. Within this framework, male speech appears to have played a central role in shaping the mainstream linguistic norms of the time. Unlike previous studies that focused primarily on novels, this research highlights the significance of analyzing male speech using sociolinguistic methods across a broader range of sources—including newspapers and rakugo(落語)—which have often been overlooked in past scholarship.
