Abstract
In this study, I examined which case particles Japanese native speakers prefer, as well as the factors influencing those choices, in contexts where te-aru constructions with visually perceptible object nouns are used. The results showed that even in situations where alternation between case particles is possible, Japanese native speakers clearly distinguish between wo and ga, selecting each based on the characteristic co-occurring elements that favor one particle over the other. The following is a summary of the features of the co-occurring elements in the groups where wo was preferred, where ga was preferred, and where neither particle showed clear predominance. <Characteristics of Co-occurring Elements in the Group Where the Particle ga Is Preferred> Place nouns frequently accompany these constructions, and the verbs used tend to belong to the class of “placement verbs” or “writing/inscribing verbs” (A1 group). In addition, situations depicting immediate, visually observable scenes are predominantly used. <Characteristics of Co-occurring Elements in the Group Where the Particle wo Is Preferred> In examples where wo-marking is preferred, place nouns are scarcely present, and verbs belonging to the A1 group of placement or writing/inscribing verbs are not used. Furthermore, rather than simple description, these constructions strongly convey the nuance of a resultant state brought about by an agent’s action. <Cases Where Neither wo nor ga Shows Clear Dominance> Japanese native speakers tend to clearly recognize the semantic distinction between ga and wo in te-aru constructions with visually perceptible object nouns and use the two particles accordingly. Such cases display the coexistence, within the same sentence, of co-occurrence environments that favor ga and those that favor wo.
