Abstract

In Phys. Ⅷ, Aristotle explains the animal self-motion in the way that one part of the animal causes motion while remaining unmoved, and the other part is moved. However, he also mentions that all things in motion are moved ‘by another’ and stresses the importance of the external environment on which animals depend while moving themselves, which leads us to doubt if ‘self-motion’ is a valid notion in his theory. This doubt seems to grow because God comes to our mind when we hear the term ‘unmoved prime mover’. In order to remove this doubt, I show that what the term refers to is different in a different context, and that we have good reasons to consider it in Phys. Ⅷ as animal’s soul, specifically the desiderative capacity. Next, I explain that even though it is true that animals depend on the environment ultimately provided by God, it never means that the unmoved prime mover of animal self-motion is the environment or God. Lastly, I argue that Aristotle’s kinetic individuation rules out the possibility God may cause any motion which has a beginning and an end.
