Abstract
In Physics 8.1, Aristotle argues for the eternity of motion, and based on this argument, he examines the views of his predecessors on cosmic motion. He gives relatively good scores to Empedocles’ cyclic succession model, but criticizes Anaxagoras’ absolute beginning model and raises strong objections to it. Some similar objection seems to be implied in a few models of modern cosmology. Several researchers have proposed cyclic succession models as alternatives to the Big Bang theory, and this seems to reflect their concerns about the problems with the concept of singularity which the Big Bang theory assumes and does not consider as an object of explanation. This paper suggests that despite the numerous differences between ancient and modern cosmologies, some similarity can be found in them, and gives an interpretation that the similarity may be due to the logical thinking of human reason that leads us to the conclusion that there is no such a thing as an absolute beginning of motion.
