아리스토텔레스는 『분석론 후서』 2권 1-2장에서 학적 탐구를 위한 물음을 네 유형, 즉 사실 물음, 존재 물음, 본질 물음, 이유 물음으로 구분하고, 이 물음들에 대한 답을 찾는 탐구에 시간적 순서를 부여하기도 한다. 이에 본고는 『분석론 후서』에 나타난 이 같은 학문 방법론이 운동의 항상성을 대상으로 삼는 『자연학』 8권의 탐구에 어떤 식으로 적용되어 있는지 확인하고, 이 확인을 통해 다음의 셋을 보이고자 한다. 첫째, 『분석론 후서』 2권 1-2장에 제시된 탐구의 시간적 순서는 원론적인 것으로서, 실제 탐구에서는 완벽히 지켜지지 않을 수 있다. 즉, 실제 탐구에서 우리는 한 유형의 물음에 아직 완벽히 답하지 않았음에도 다른 유형의 물음으로 넘어갈 수 있다. 둘째, 다른 유형의 물음에 답하는 과정을 거치면서, 탐구 초기에 던졌던 물음도 또 그것에 대한 대답도 정확성 측면에서 수정 및 향상될 수 있다. 셋째, 다른 유형의 물음을 함께 고려하며 탐구 초기에 던졌던 물음과 그에 대한 대답을 수정하고 향상시키는 것은, 탐구 대상이 쉽게 또는 아예 감각되지 않아 탐구의 난이도가 높은 경우에 충분히 일어날 수 있는 것으로서, 자연스러운 일이다.
Abstract
In Posterior Analytics Ⅱ1-2, Aristotle presents four types of questions for scientific inquiry (questions of whether it is the case, whether it exists, what it is, and why it is), and gives a temporal order of inquiry to find an answer to each question. This paper attempts to clarify how this methodological consideration is applied to the scientific inquiry of Physics Ⅷ into eternal motion and to show the following three: First, the temporal order mentioned in Posterior Analytics Ⅱ1-2 may not be perfectly followed in our actual inquiry. That is to say, in our actual inquiry, we can move on to another type of question even if we have not yet completely answered one type of question. Second, as we go through the process of answering different types of questions, both our initial question and our answer to it can be revised and improved in their accuracy. Third, it is natural for us to revise and improve both the initial question and the answer to it by considering different types of questions together, as we do when the inquiry is highly difficult because its object is not easily perceived or imperceptible.
