Abstract
The plot composition of the Ajax has been criticized for a long time because of the rapid change of mood that occurs after the protagonist, Ajax, commits suicide in the middle of the play. Critics have agreed that the play lacks unity as it can be divided into two parts before and after the suicide of Ajax. This scholarly consensus is observed in the scholia noted in the ancient and medieval ages, and up to the 20th century. After the 20th century, various researchers have attempted to justify the function of the second half of the play, but many of these theories can be characterized as post-excuses, or they admit the structural flaws of this tragedy and regard ‘diptych’ form as a remnant of a transitional period in the process of the development of Sophocles’ dramaturgy. These approaches seem to have resulted from an excessive emphasis on Ajax’s suicide in the reading of this tragedy. The Ajax consists of two main plots: Ajax’s suicide in the earlier part and the debate on the burial of his body in the latter part. However, the play is not divided into two parts; it is unified by a single theme, that of Ajax’s rehabilitation. The rehabilitation has been already begun by the living Ajax himself in the first half and came to final completion, as the remained people proceeded to bury this body in the second half. The first half of the play is focused on the mind and behavior of Ajax in his private, inner world, in the world of his friends. The second half of the play shows Ajax in his public, outer world, the world of enemies, with the evaluation of others on Ajax’s excellence and faults. These two worlds with and without the presence of Ajax provide two contrary perspectives on him. The so-called ‘diptych’ form of the play is designed to provide a structural frame to see Ajax, the character with ambivalent personality of the greatness and flaws, from different perspectives, so that the audiences or readers have the opportunity to observe him from a rational and balanced perspective. These two world has formal unity through the repeat of the plot pattern according to the comp lication(desis)-change(metabasis)-resolution(lusis) structure and some elements.
