Abstract

In this paper, I explicate the meaning of Aristotle’s definition of Motion in Physics 3.1. At first, I explain that “actualization” which implies a passage or a process cannot be an appropriate translation for the concept of entelecheia, and that this concept implies the etymological meaning of “the state of being complete”. My point is not that “the state of being complete” is the only appropriate translation for entelecheia but that we need to give an account of the reason why the concept which implies completeness is put in the definiens of motion as process. For this, I explain that the concept of entelecheia doesn’t mean a process or a product and has nothing to do with the ‘process or product’ problem, and emphasize the role of “ei toiouton”. Aristotle shows us by entelecheia that the thing in motion is in a state of being complete in the sense that it is exercising its power to be F, and by adding a condition of "ei toiouton” he tells us that this completeness is not of what is F but of what can be F. Consequently I argue that the meaning of process is present not in entelecheia, but in the whole structure of the definition.
