Abstract

In this paper, I discuss Aristotle’s account of luck (τύχη) and chance (αὐτόματον) in Physics II. chapters 4-6. The passage in question has been much discussed by Aristotelian scholars but there are many issues that need reconsidering. I closely read the passage, especially chapter 5, line by line and discuss issues that come along. Particularly, I pose the following questions and suggest answers that are different from the popular interpretation adopted by scholars such as Ross: 1) What exactly is the thing that is due to luck, in the story of a lucky creditor, Aristotle’s paradigm example of a lucky incident? 2) How should we understand Aristotle's explanation of ‘for the sake of something’ (ἕνεκά του)? 3) What is the (fullest) definition of luck (and chance) Aristotle provides in these chapters? My answers are: 1) The (primary) thing due to luck in the example of the lucky creditor is not his meeting the debtor or getting his money back but his going to the market. 2) An ad hoc interpretation of ἕνεκά του is unnecessary. 3) Aristotle's fullest definition of luck appears only in the last part of the chapter in 197a32-35.
