Abstract

Vocabulary is a unit of thought and an element that expresses ideas. Among the various types of vocabulary, academic language has a significant impact not only on an individual’s language life but also on school education. Academic language helps to diversify and refine each learner’s thinking, allowing them to express their thoughts more richly and dynamically, thereby supporting their personal growth and development. It also plays a crucial role in receiving instruction and participating in subject learning at school, influencing learners’ self-esteem and sense of achievement. Due to its importance, many scholars have shown interest in academic language for a long time and have identified and listed words that possess the characteristics of this specialized vocabulary. However, research is limited on what aspects to consider when teaching academic language to elementary school students, as well as on effective teaching methods tailored to this age group. Therefore, this study aims to identify the key elements to focus on when teaching academic language to elementary students and provides specific teaching strategies with practical examples. Although the proposed methods for teaching academic language to elementary students in this paper may not be entirely new, they integrate various vocabulary teaching approaches considering the characteristics of academic language. These methods are presented with a focus on vocabulary development to propose effective ways to teach academic language. Given that vocabulary skills are a core aspect of literacy, further research on diverse vocabulary teaching strategies should be continued.
