Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive answer to the question, "What is environmental philosophy?" The academic term "environmental ethics" is familiar to both the general reader and professional researchers. However, it is not easy to answer questions about the discipline called ‘environmental philosophy.’ In particular, it is increasingly difficult to find an answer to the question of how to establish a relationship with traditional Western philosophy. This paper first seeks to present the academic nature of what we might call "environmental philosophy." The author's core argument regarding the academic nature of environmental philosophy is that its fundamental nature is a "the environmental theoretical shift in philosophy." Furthermore, the author distinguishes three key characteristics. First, environmental philosophy possesses the academic nature of critical philosophy. That is, it engages in a confrontational framework with existing traditional philosophy and seeks new academic disciplines through theoretical critique. Second, environmental philosophy possesses the academic nature of applied philosophy, aiming to address emerging environmental issues in contemporary society. Third, environmental philosophy possesses the academic characteristics of a convergent philosophy that evolves and changes across multiple dimensions through interdisciplinary research. After presenting these characteristics, the author proposes a method for distinguishing the "prehistory of environmental philosophical thought" to establish the relationship between modern environmental philosophy and traditional Western philosophy. And, from the perspective of this distinction, the author analyzes the discursive flow of modern environmental philosophy as a project of ‘transition from anthropocentrism to post-anthropocentrism’ in philosophy, and concludes the discussion.
