Abstract
The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that early peer play interaction may be a protective factor for boys against the negative relations between early expressive vocabulary and later emotional regulation difficulties during the transition to elementary school. Data from the 6th and 8th waves of Panel Study on Korean Children were used for the analyses, with 139 boys and 98 girls as participants. The results showed that the negative link between expressive vocabulary skills at age 5 and emotional regulation difficulties at age 7 was much stronger for boys than for girls, and that prosocial peer play interaction at age 5 moderated this link only for boys. A lower engagement of peer play interaction strongly predicted the effect of lower expressive vocabulary on higher emotional regulation difficulties, whereas higher engagement of peer play interaction did not predict such negative effect. These results confirmed that limited expressive vocabulary in early childhood may increase later emotional regulation difficulties of boys. However, peer play interaction can buffer this link. These findings provided evidence for the linkage between language production and emotional regulation which was suggested by Vygotsky (1962), and further extended the empirical base by showing that the positive role of peer play interaction in this link may differ for boys and girls. The implications were discussed with regard to a play-based intervention for preschool children.
