Abstract

This study aimed to explore the behavior of young children during digital play using storytelling. The subjects were 24 five-year-old children from a kindergarten in Seoul, who engaged in digital play using storytelling from May to November 2023, for approximately six months. Participant observation, recording and transcribing the play process were conducted, as well as informal interviews with the children and their homeroom teacher. The children used tablet PCs to create digitalized stories, incorporating elements such as themes, settings, characters, plot, and conflicts through digital media, content, applications, and other digitalized materials. The collected data were analyzed using open coding, which involved organizing and categorizing repeated patterns and concepts. The analysis revealed three main aspects of children’s behavior in digital play using storytelling: (1) “Playing Across Boundaries,” (2) “Becoming Digital Storytellers,” and (3) “Facing Challenges in the Digital Environment.” This study suggests an educational approach to utilizing digital media in early childhood education that enhances children’s creative expression, interaction, and depth of learning. Additionally, it provides insights into how young children engage in digital play and learning autonomously, deepening our understanding of the children’s lives and experiences in relation to digital media.
