Abstract
This study examined how the ‘Running Together’ program fostered a supportive classroom atmosphere by encouraging 5-year-old children to support one another and pursue shared goals, and how it enhanced their physical fitness and self- regulation. A total of 34 5-year-old children participated in the study, with 17 in the experimental group from K childcare center in City S, and 17 in the control group from U childcare center in City U. Physical fitness was measured using an assessment tool developed by the Korean Ministry of Education and Human Resources (2006), and self-regulation was evaluated using a teacher-reported measure originally developed by Boyer (2023) and adapted by Park et al. (2024). The experimental group participated in ‘Running Together’ program for 7 weeks, while the control group engaged in their usual outdoor activities. Independent t-tests on pre- and post-intervention changes showed significant improvements in the experimental group compared to the control group in both physical fitness and self-regulation. All fitness measures (muscular endurance, agility, explosive power, balance, flexibility) and self-regulation (initiation and persistence, adjustment and inhibition) improved significantly. These results suggest that ‘Running Together’ program effectively enhances physical fitness and self-regulation. This study highlights the importance of educational support for physical activities, such as ‘Running Together’, to promote healthy development and a supportive classroom atmosphere in early childhood.
