Abstract

In the long history of disharmony(diaphora) between philosophy and art, Plato's exile of artists has been understood as a representative declaration that was the expression of art's death. Similarly, Hegel's claim that art is only the past has been regarded as a final victory of philosophy over art. It is a general Interpretation that Hegel strengthened the subordination of art to philosophy from Plato to Hegel himself. But it depends on the investigation into Hegel's interpretation of Plato's exile of artists whether this general interpretation is right. This investigation goes as follows;First of all, we have to investigate the key point of Plato's exile of artists. In this investigation we can know that Plato's exile of artists is based on the criticism of imitation in poetry from the standpoint of education and morality. However, not only in Aesthetic but also in the other writings, Hegel never considered this critical standpoint of Plato's himself. Rather, Hegel interpreted the exile of artists from the standpoint of the development of history and consciousness. For this reason, it is possible that Hegel's interpretation of Plato's exile of artists is not immanent in Plato's philosophy. In spite of this limitations it becomes very clear that in fact Hegel himself strengthened the subordination of art to philosophy definitively by his own interpretation. Hegel regarded the exile of artists not as Plato's own idea but as a result that promptly meets the needs of that period. According to Hegel's claim, from the period when Plato lived it became possible that Gods were seriously considered. This serious consideration means the development of philosophical thought. In Hegel's opinion, before the times of Plato art itself was religion, because art created and manifested gods for itself, for example as ancient sculpture did. But in the time of Plato this situation had changed, and then art was no longer absolute like gods, but relative. For this reason, Hegel pinpointed Plato's exile of artists in transition from classical art form to romantic art form, and he interpreted it from his own philosophical viewpoint.
