Abstract
In contemporary society, relationality is increasingly recognized as significant, drawing attention to questions of being and ethics in relationships. Friendship, which is not unilateral but premised on reciprocity, can offer a new perspective on relational existence. This paper proposes hospitality as a condition of friendship based on mutual respect and equality, and analyzes its characteristics. It highlights that friendship involves both equality and selective differentiation. It examines the nature of friendship as respect for the Other through the forming and severing of relationships by Ji Kang (嵇康), a member of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove during the Wei-Jin period. Ji Kang regarded individual choices as stemming from one’s innate disposition or heart-mind (xin, 心), viewing them as free and personal. This is closely linked to the formation of mutual trust. In his letter to Shan Tao, Ji Kang acknowledges their different paths and emphasizes the need to recognize and respect each as true to themselves. In contrast, in a letter to another friend, Lü Sun, he declares the withdrawal of friendship due to a betrayal of trust. Ji Kang’s confidence was grounded in personhood—one’s status as a human being deserving of equal respect—and as long as that was not violated, recognition and respect for the Other could be maintained. However, in a structure where diverse relations are densely entangled, hospitality toward the Other must be called for as a more fundamental condition of friendship than personhood.
