Abstract
This article dwells upon an epistemological standpoint of marginal position resulting from the geographical and cultural peculiarities of Jeju Island. It could be called the dialectics of settlement and migration. Sea opens as well as confines, which bridges the land to the outside world. In this sense, sea is not a boundary dividing the inside from the outside, but a border that allows the heterogeneous elements to penetrate and intermingle with each other. Being under the power exercised from the center, there is potential for Jeju Island as the margin-border to bring hybridity that can resist the universality imposed upon them. The dynamic of the opening and closing of borders has changed due to temporal-spatial transformation the technological development has caused. In the wake of the compression of time and space, the opening has become more prevalent than the closing, which, in Jeju, has been manifested as a compressed and rapid modernization. It is ironic that the modernization of the island as a tourist destination started from the ‘closing’effect that enabled the preservation of the original nature and culture. Unfortunately, the modernization is eroding and destroying the cultural heritage and the beauty of its own ecology even to this day. The key argument of this paper is that, the cultural and political capacities of Jeju Island as the margin-border can enable us to imagine a new ‘mode of life’ alternative to the prevailing developmentalism. In this view, it suggests a sustainable paradigm of tourism rather than the one of developmentdestruction.
